PRODUCTS AND SOLUTIONS
In response to the federal government's Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 201 Standard for Personal Identity Verification (PIV), Cross Match is providing products and solutions to help the federal government clear employees through electronic fingerprint background checks, and equip them with biometric ID badges. The primary purpose of PIV is to help the government ensure only vetted employees receive ID cards. An added benefit is that PIV enables a government agency to improve overall efficiency and reduce costs with one enterprise-wide credentialing system that is compliant with all government standards and interoperable with other agencies. The PIV card can be used for biometric security applications on location and in the field, such as door access control, computer network access control and remote site ID verification.
The PIV program includes the following steps:
Step 1: Agency designated sponsor submits electronic request to the federal agency registrar for an employee credential
Step 2: Agency designated registrar takes photos, fingerprints and ID data from employee
Step 3: Registrar validates the authenticity of identity documents such as drivers licenses, birth certificates or passports
Step 4: Registrar ensures the employee is not enrolled in the credentialing system more than once
Step 5: Registrar conducts an electronic fingerprint background check on employee through the Office of Personnel Management (OPM)
Step 6: Registrar validates all info on employee upon receiving background check clearance
Step 7: Agency designated issuer digitally signs and encrypts the credential elements and issues an ID card to the employee. The SP800-73 specification defines the format and content stored on the PIV card which includes the fingerprint image information captured during the background check/registration process
Step 8: The employee's identity is verified with a fingerprint and optional facial match by the Issuer
Step 9: A PIN number is created for the employee and stored on the ID card
Step 10: Employee receives the ID card
